Battlefield News

February 2009

Not only are American forts, battlefields and other historical landmarks but landmarks around the world are continued to be under threats of disrepair and closing their doors for ever.  I received the below news through a few friends from livinghistoryworldwide.com

Newbury Battlefield under threat!
The depressing news that Newbury’s battlefield sites are under threat from 4,000 houses by the local council is sad enough, but now EH have started a Battlefields at Risk register as the problem with land shortages is causing new pressure on historical monuments. Battlefield land not usually being on floodplains has suddenly made them attractive to builders, and unfortunately they have always held sway with local government over the likes of us.

Here’s an article from the BBC to highlight the problem: Link to article!

It is very sad, that many of our nations battlefields are endangered to becoming new malls, neighborhoods, and parking garages.   Every month that I hear about a new battlefield endangerment saddens me, but here is another battlefield that needs help.  I got this news through myspace community.

We’ve been informed that Fort Mifflin on the Delaware, a historical site that has been around since the Revolutionary War, may be closing it’s doors forever. Unfortunately, they are hurting for cash, as you will read in the article.

If you can make a small contribution, be it monetarily or in the way of free air time on the radio, an article in a magazine, etc., we think it would greatly help the fort. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

We have been friends with the fort for about 10 years now and it would be sad to see it close forever. Please pass this info along to everyone you know. Thanks again. Please see the link for more info. Fort Mifflin Needs Help!

Walmart is planning on building a 141,000 sq. ft. Superstore next to the Wilderness and Chancellorsville Battlefields. Do you want to see the historical significance of both of these battlefields marred forever by more pavement, more traffic and more developement that a Walmart Supercenter will bring in its wake?

Go to this website and help save the wilderness battlefield from Wal-mart! http://www.civilwar.org/walmart08/

GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD HRS.

This is old news for those of you who have visited Gettysburg countless times. It is for those of you who might be visiting Gettysburg, PA for the very first time.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Visitor hours at Gettysburg National Military Park will change during the winter months. From Nov. 1 through March 31 the park will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. From April 1 through Oct. 31, the park will remain open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The National Park Service (NPS) made the decision after consideration of more than 200 public comments received in May (see July Civil War News). Under the policy, park-approved special events, such as the annual Remembrance Illumination, youth group campground operations, and park-sponsored public meetings will continue to be permitted. Certain park avenues will continue to be accessible 24 hours a day for vehicular through-travel only.

For more information contact Gettysburg National Military Park at (717) 334-1124, ext. 422 or 431 or visit the park web site at www.nps.gov/gett/home.htm
